We’ve discussed how important it is to stay physically healthy to maintain independence as we age. Elderly people often share how the freedom to live in their own homes is a top priority. That’s why making sure exercise a lifelong habit is so important. Physical exercise helps preserve bones, joints, muscles as well as stave off illnesses and injuries.

One of the other big issues as we age is battling forms of depression. Loneliness is a top issue for many people. Living alone is an important goal, but isolation is unhealthy. It doesn’t make sense to be mentally and physically healthy without addressing needs like companionship, purpose, and a sense of community.

Staying Fit Can be a Social Activity

Studies show that people who have a sense of community live longer. It’s easy to be active with others. From walking the dog, to participating in league sports, there are plenty of ways to get fit and socialize. As a matter of fact, the American Public Health Association attributes social interaction among seniors with improving mood, cognition, memory recall, and an increased likelihood of being physically active.

Group Exercise Can be FUN!

Group exercise can be fun. The benefits surpass being physically fit and include improved self-esteem, accountability, and a sense of belonging. Plus, group activities often make exercise feel more like play than a workout. Consider these ideas for getting fit in a crowd-

Join the gym- If you haven’t been to the gym lately, they are often a one-stop-shop for being social while getting fit. There are always a variety of classes available and one will surely fit your needs. Meet up with friends before or after your workout and give yourself a mental health boost.

Join a league- From bowling to softball there are tons of ways to be active in your community. Leagues are a fun way to connect with other people and scratch the competitive itch.

Sign up for a class- Whether it’s Yoga, spin, Pilates, or any other type of workout, classes are fun. If you prefer intimate groups, classes are great since they tend to be small.

Attend events- Community events are often centered around physical activities. From fun runs to walk-a-thons there are all sorts of ways to join in. Cleaning up trash in your community or painting buildings is also a great way to be active and engage with friends at the same time.

MeetUp groups- You can use services like MeetUp.com or social media to find groups near you of likeminded people looking for connection. Hiking groups, running groups, and all kinds of activities may be happening nearby. If you don’t see a group, consider creating one.

I teach group fitness for the last two years at my local gym.  It has been a wonderful opportunity for me to both exercise, earn some money, and make a number of new friends.  I really do love it.  And I recommend it to everyone.

Developing a lifelong love for fitness is easier when you are in it with friends. Finding activities you love can help keep you healthy as you age and ensure you don’t lose touch and feel isolated. Get social, get fit, and get excited about your life.
