Do You Have a Healthy Endocrine System?

Our bodies are a complex co-mingling of systems designed to regulate everything from our skeletal structure to our ability to breath in and out. While the various systems are individualized, they work in conjunction with one another for our whole health. The endocrine system is a series of glands charged with secreting hormones that regulate functions like growth, metabolism, sexual health, sleep cycles, as well as other functions.

Understanding the endocrine system helps identify symptoms that may alert you to dysfunctions that could go unnoticed otherwise. People tend to be more familiar with the common disorders caused by a poorly functioning endocrine system than they are with the healthy functions of their hormones. Some disorders include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Thyroid disease
  • Menstruation disorders
  • Breast cancer
  • Autoimmune disease

 

Each of these diseases is triggered by hormonal issues that result from a breakdown in the system. There are many reasons why an interruption in health may occur:

  • Genetics
  • Poor nutrition
  • Lack of medical care
  • And other factors

 

Many conditions can be managed with proper medical care but there are things you can do to prevent or reduce the symptoms as well. Things like:

 

Eating well- Your diet is a primary contributor to health-related factors in your life. What you eat and how much of it can contribute positively or negatively to your endocrine system. Eating healthy foods, including fruits, vegetables, and high-protein foods, makes a big difference. Also, including iodine in your diet is especially helpful for the thyroid.

 

Moving- Getting proper exercise and plenty of it will help regulate your hormones. This may not mean high-intensity workouts. Relaxing forms of exercise such as yoga or stretching may be just as beneficial for the endocrine system as running or high-intensity sports.

 

Getting lots of sleep- One of the interruptions caused by the endocrine system can affect sleep cycles. Hormones are released that revive and sedate our bodies in a natural rhythm. It is vital to work with this rhythm for maximum rejuvenation and restoration for all systems of the body.
