Hope and Help for Acid Reflux

Hope and Help for Hearburn- Purposeful Nutrition

Do you struggle with acid reflux (also known as heartburn)? I have and did especially when I was pregnant, all four times. Acid reflux comes from the stomach acid refluxing back up into the esophagus. The esophagus does not have a lining able to handle the high acid content of stomach fluids and so it burns, or in my case, caused a chronic cough. Other symptoms include asthma like symptoms, a hoarse voice, continually clearing the throat,  and a sour taste in one’s mouth. (p. 17)

“In 2004, 64.6 million medications were prescribed by doctors for GERD, accounting for over half of all prescriptions for digestive disorders.”  (Statistics from U.S. Dept of Health and Human Services)   It is clearly a huge problem in our country and most people have had a struggle with it.

I had the opportunity to read and review the new e-book 3o Day Heartburn Solution by Craig Fear. (I received a review copy in exchange for an unbiased review.)  This is a well written easy to understand book on the topic. It is 187 pages long with 4 sections.

Part 1 is Understanding Heartburn. Mr. Fear does a good job of very simply explaining how our digestive system works and what heartburn really is. If you feel like you just confused what you try to figure out how your system works you will find his explanations really helpful.

Part 2 is Understanding Real Food.  Again he does a great job of going through the various categories of real food and letting us know how and why they are necessary for our health. The author grounds his information in the work of Dr. Weston A. Price who is someone I have studied and found very helpful as well. (Now you know why I like this book. Mr. Fear’s solution is grounded in eating real food and making changes in  your diet, which is the whole premise of this blog.)

Part 3 explains his 3 step plan which centers around going grain free short term, healing the GI tract with real foods, and then adding in supplementation if needed. It is really very simple and not expensive to implement (although for some people will mean some real changes.)

Part 4 is called Putting It All Together and includes menu planning and recipe ideas. I will see that recipes are very basic and focus on fermented foods, and soups and stews. There are no images in the recipe section. I would not buy this book for the recipes as there are recipe books out there with more impressive presentations.

BUT I do like this e-book and find it very helpful in understanding heartburn and giving a workable and manageable solution to dealing with it.  I have found relief from my heartburn and it has come about from implementing some of the principles in this book, over the past few years.

If you are looking for a simple and easy to manage approach to heartburn and acid reflux I can recommend the e-book 30 Day Heartburn Solution. And as of today 2/24/15 the Kindle version is only 99 cents. (Not sure how long that will be true though.)

It is also available in paperback for those of us who like to have a physical book in our hands.
